"A new book aimed at helping
skaters prepare psychologically for training and competition has been written by
Choeleen Loundagin, a former competitive figure skater with a master's degree in
sports psychology. Entitled The Inner Champion,
the book is clearly written, easy to understand, and organized in a
fill-in-the-blank workbook fashion designed to help the skater work through and
keep track of his or her goals and progress.
The book's nine chapters address the following topics: mental skills: what
they are and how to develop them; goal setting: why they're important and how to
set realistic goals; self-talk and confidence: using positive vs. negative
thought, how to improve confidence; activation control and peak performance:
determining your optimal energy level, plus relaxation and energizing
techniques; imagery: what it is, how it works, how to practice it; attention
focus control: evaluating and improving your ability to remain focused; and
using mental skills to enhance healing and comebacks, deal with pain, and for
tests and competitions." Skater's Edge Magazine

"The Inner Champion encourages skaters to think and write about
various feelings in a typical workbook format. The supervision of a parent or coach would be necessary to insure proper completion of assignments. The
manual is written for all ages but some of the vocabulary seems to be
appropriate for ages 11 and up (grade 5). A glossary defines more complex words
and concepts.
What I liked most about the manual is its organization. The table of contents
and index are very detailed which makes for easy reference. Within each section,
the layout is well spaced and highlighted in bold letters, italics and
underlined which makes skimming the material very easy.
In terms of information, the manual covers many topics in a simple, easy to
understand way for skaters, parents, and coaches. I think coaches could present
one section to their students every week in a class format and achieve very fine
results. The sections I found most useful and informative covered goal setting
and attentional focus control. I very highly recommend this manual as a mental
learning tool."
